Dr.Elizabeth Mathew

Dr.Elizabeth Mathew carries with her thirty three years of teaching, research and extension experience of which thirty one years was spent at the Loyola College of Social Sciences, a postgraduate and research centre in Thiruvananthapuram and two full years in community research with the Programme for Community Organisation which was also situated in this city. Currently Dr.Elizabeth is the Facilitator, Institutional Industry Collaboration at the Loyola Extension Services.

She hold a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry and a Masters in Sociology both from Kerala University, a Masters of Philosophy in Sociology from Madras University and a Doctorate in Sociology from Kerala University. Being born in colonial Tanganyika and schooled in  independent socialist Tanzania, Elizabeth holds values of democratic socialism in her work and life. She has keen interest in the upliftment of society and thus keeps herself involved with professional and social organisations that are united with this mission.


During her professional career she held various administrative positions in the college as Principal, Head of Department of Sociology, Coordinator of Women’s Unit, Treasurer and Bulletin Editor of Alumni Association and also had responsible positions in the University of Kerala as Member, Board of Studies and Chairperson, Postgraduation Examination Board, She was involved with Distance Education programme in Sociology of Calicut University in the nineties. 


Dr Elizabeth worked with professional bodies such as -the Kerala Sociological Society to become its President,  the Indian Sociological Society to become Bulletin Editor of its Research Committee on Tourism & Society and also with the International Sociological Association  in which she was the Vice President of Research Committee on Tourism, and the Asia Representative of Research Committee on Women in Society. She is also an active member of the Trivandrum Management Association, Alliance Francaise-Trivandrum, The YMCA & YMC of Trivandrum.


Her areas of sociological interest are Women, Tourism, Industry, Social development, Diversity & Inclusion.
In the area of training she has worked extensively with students, the poor and the rural/slum women. She has also given training to Rural Block Officers, administrative staff of private organisations and College teachers at the academic staff college.


Dr.Elizabeth was Editor of the International Research Journal of Loyola College named Loyola Journal of Social Sciences for 5 years.


In Industry she has held the post of Director, Rovas Consultancies Pvt. Ltd and also handled the position of Gender Consultant and External Member, Committee on Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Workplace of IT companies.


Dr. Elizabeth Mathew had the opportunity to work as an adjunct faculty and as a consultant to the International Institute for Scientific and Academic Collaboration (IISAC), New Jersey, USA to promote Indo-US education and research.


Her social camaraderie has brought her numerous professional and social ties around the world. Other than english, she is conversant with two foreign languages and three Indian languages. She has widely travelled to 36 countries for the purposes of presenting papers/attending conferences/ organizing conference sessions/ and being a guest professor.


At present she is on the panel for the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the University Grants Commission India, and Consultant to Rovas Consultancies Pvt. Ltd and has interest in higher education and youth entrepreneurship. Taking on from this interest she has recently been able to bring together academicians from digital sciences and social sciences on a common platform for developing an interactive course that could bring good to the common man.
